Surveillance: Someone's Watching You

The article mentions the invasion of privacy that comes with the internet. Through webcams, people are able to spy on you through this without you even knowing. Furthermore, the location access allows people and strangers to know where you are at all times. Companies buy and sell our information however we do not realise that we are also being spied on at all times and our privacy is completely invaded without us even knowing. Targeted adverts (date mining) is described as 'deep, intensive and persistent surveillance' (Naughton, 2014) which often lets, for example, to infer a Facebook user's IQ, sexuality, political views, personality ect. by what they must have liked on Facebook (Halliday, 2013) there has also been research showing that individual's attitudes can be subjective by what they see on Facebook feeds.

I think there are definitely both positive and negative debates in relation to data mining. It could be considered a good thing as it helps to achieve a better online experience for the individual as everyone will have a different experience through the different advertising. The more the institutions know about you, for example Google, the more they are able to advertise appropriately and directly for the individual making it all the more suitable. However, this is of course breaching your privacy issues without the individual even knowing it as they are allowing institutions to share their date and sell it in order to make profits. It terms of allowing locations to be shown, this would mean strangers would be able to locate where you live and also the government are able to track you. The fact that you are able to be tracked and things like RFID are developing, the biggest ethical concern of privacy must be considered and the question really is, how much do you want a stranger to know? I think that with smart phone nowadays and the great factor of convergence, it enables a user to do everything on their phone efficiently, therefore makes it easier for hackers to understand everything about a person through accessing their device. Although convergence allows efficiency, it also means that your location would usually always be on, for example with the use of Google Maps for accuracy, however it enables people to easily track your every move, which is extremely unsafe. Not only do smart phones invade a person's privacy but also laptops. The webcam can be hacked into and used for other, complete strangers to see what you're doing and this is completely unethical. Although there are many issues with the internet and the privacy aspects, overall it depends completely on how much the individual is aware of situations going on and would therefore be more conscious of what they are doing online and whether or not they should be doing what they are doing; I think date mining is a great technique for institutions to make money and to create a better online experience for the individual, despite the annoying pop-up adverts that consume some web pages.

Introduction To NDM: Reading + Blog Task

Summaries
The first article is mainly based around the facts that school life and home life are completely different and although schools try to make everyone the same and treat everyone equally, they are all different. It also focuses on how schools are interested more in teaching about popular culture rather than important cultural or social issues and the effects of the media. There were also issues that the researchers faced before carrying out the study as the two key principles that researchers have to address are: will doing research harm anybody? And do the people being researched consent to being involved? The researchers also believed that they would discover issues that may raise legal issues, however when actually carrying out the study most of what has been said in the media was not discovered, such as the issues of sexting or abuse online.

The second article is based around Periscope and the advantages and disadvantages of the live-streaming app. The advantages of it are that you are able to get live coverage of certain events and in a particular case has been used to catch a drink driver. Furthermore, it enables a marginalised audience to be viewed as anyone can use the app and stream themselves all around the world. However, the obvious issue would be privacy, due to the fact that during live-stream broadcasts people that may not want to be filmed may be filmed without consent, causing privacy issues. Also, the location of where you are when you're streaming is on, therefore there are issues as to strangers knowing where you live and this could be very dangerous. There is also the problem of piracy as people may live-stream the coverage of exclusive events like a boxing match, which is only available on box office and would therefore cost, periscoping this would allow several people to watch the match for free, which conjures up piracy issues.

A2 Essay
I think the A2 essay was so successful due to the fact that it is a clear media debate, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of using spotify. It also weighs up both sides of the argument and the student also forms their own opinion, backing up their points with several media theories, which makes it an extremely fluent and extensive argument.

How has the media changed your life in the last 5 years?
5 years ago I was not as involved in social networking as I am today; the only social networking sites I used were Whatsapp, MSN and perhaps facebook. However, nowadays, my involvement in social networking sites is much more extensive from Twitter to Instagram and I no longer use facebook or MSN. During the years, social networking in general, has developed largely and from the simple connection and interaction with friends it has become a global phenomenon to interact with a larger bases all around the world. It allows your opinion to be formed and projected to a much wider audience and therefore allows you to connect with new people. I mostly use Twitter and the reason for this is due to the news content it enables me to come across.
Furthermore, I hardly watch TV and if I do it is never a mainstream channel like ITV or BBC. I think Netflix has taken over my life more so, however even Netflix has become a service that I have declined in using.
Overall, I think the media has changed my life positively in the last 5 years as I am able to keep up to date with a lot more social events through social networking and also stay connected with friends and family. The negative impacts it has had on my life however is the fact that when a new app is created and there is a lot of hype about it, I also have to download it to see what the hype is about; this just shows how the media manipulates us as young people.
